What Happens Next
A clear, stage-by-stage timeline of what to expect after you file your VA disability claim — from submission to your first payment.
Overview
After you file, VA processes your claim through several stages. The total time from filing to a final rating decision typically ranges from 3 to 7 months, though complex claims or appeals can take longer. Here's what each stage looks like and what you should do during each one.
Stage 1: Claim received (Day 1–5)
VA confirms receipt of your claim and assigns it a tracking number. You'll see it appear in the VA.gov claim status portal. If you filed online, this may show within 24–48 hours. VA begins gathering your service records and any VA medical records.
Stage 2: Initial review (Week 1–3)
A claims processor reviews your submission to confirm it's complete and identifies what evidence is still needed. If you're missing records or a form, VA may send you a development letter asking for more information. Respond quickly — delays in returning requested documents extend your wait time.
Stage 3: Evidence gathering (Week 2–8)
VA requests records on your behalf — service treatment records, VA medical records, and records you authorized via Form 21-4142. This is often the longest stage. You can speed it up by submitting all your private medical records yourself when you file.
Stage 4: C&P exam (Week 4–12)
For most disability claims, VA schedules a Compensation & Pension exam at a VA medical center or a contracted provider (such as QTC or LHI). This is not a treatment appointment — it's an evaluation. The examiner's report becomes part of your evidence file. Attend the exam and be thorough about your worst symptoms. Missing this exam results in an automatic denial.
Stage 5: Decision (Week 8–24+)
Once all evidence is gathered and the C&P report is in, a VA rater reviews everything and assigns a rating. You'll receive a decision letter by mail and the decision will appear in your VA.gov portal. Check current national average processing times at va.gov/disability/after-you-file-claim.
Stage 6: Award letter and first payment (1–4 weeks after decision)
If your claim is approved, VA sends an award letter showing your combined disability rating, your effective date, and your monthly payment amount. Your first direct deposit typically arrives within 15 days of the award decision. Retroactive back pay (from your effective date to the decision date) is paid in a lump sum.
Tips while you wait
- Check your claim status at VA.gov or call 1-800-827-1000.
- Respond to any VA letters immediately — delayed responses extend your wait.
- If four months pass with no movement, contact your VSO or VA regional office.
- Don't stop seeking treatment. Continued medical records strengthen any future claim for an increase.
- If your condition worsens while your claim is pending, document the dates — this may affect your rating.
